Three Things To Look For at Boise State's First Scrimmage
After just over a week of fall camp, the Boise State football team will hold their first scrimmage this afternoon at Bronco Stadium. If you are in town and can get work off, this is where you need to be.
Here are some things to look for at today's scrimmage.
Who will step up on the defensive front?
Junior Ryan Winterswyk is the only returning starter on the defensive line, and in order to stop strong running teams like Oregon and Nevada, the Broncos need to have some players step up to fill in the holes.
All eyes were on freshman Michael Atkinson to take one of spots at tackle. But with his recent injury and suspension, it's possible he might not even play until next year.
Pay attention to Jarrell Root, Bryon Hout, Billy Winn, and Chase Baker to see who will be the next generation of trench workers.
Is Jeremy Avery ready to be a full-time starter?
No Bronco fans are really concerned with the departure of Ian Johnson because they have seen what probable starter Jeremy Avery can do. Pay attention to how he handles an increased amount of carries and if he takes on some of the leadership left behind by Ian.
Who will be the go-to receiver for Kellen Moore?
With the early departure of WR Jeremy Childs, Kellen Moore will be looking to establish his next go-to guy. Fortunately there are plenty of choices.
Look for juniors Titus Young and Austin Pettis to be his new favorite targets. Will one emerge as the top receiver, or will the Broncos have a dual-threat pass attack this year?
Unfortunately, I will not be in attendance this afternoon. If you are, please look for some of these things and bring back some answers for me.
Also, watch for Lace Banachek's recap of the scrimmage, where he will answer these and many other questions about the Broncos.
