Boise State’s shrunken practice schedule creates intrigue
There’s been a perception that Chris Petersen isn’t utilizing Boise State’s full allotment of bowl practices because he wants to protect against burnout. That had him shaking his head yesterday. With the Broncos’ first real practice for the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas coming last night, Petersen sounds like he’s cramming for the type of final exam that kept his team off the field most of the past week. “Our deal is we’ve got to get our work in here,” said Pete. Kellen Moore thinks the Broncos are in gear, though. “Guys are looking at tape as much as they always do,” said Moore. “We’ve got smart football players…they know.”
Boise State has something in this bowl game it didn’t have in its last one: Austin Pettis. The senior wide receiver played only a handful of snaps in January’s Fiesta Bowl win over TCU, as he wasn’t fully recovered from a lower leg fracture suffered 5½ weeks earlier. Pettis did have one catch in the game, and it converted a fourth down in the second quarter. Now the Broncos get the full-on version of Pettis Wednesday night against Utah in Las Vegas. With Titus Young having a monster year, Boise State hasn’t had to depend upon Pettis as much as last season. But Pettis still has 59 catches for 804 yards and nine touchdowns. He also, of course, became the Broncos’ career leader this season in receptions (now with 217), and touchdown catches (now with 38). His records—wherever they end up next week—will last a long, long time.
The man who’s coached Pettis up the past four seasons, Boise State wide receivers coach Brent Pease, was named the 2010 FootballScoop Wide Receivers Coach of the Year yesterday. A panel of coaches, including previous recipients, selected Pease over Alabama’s Curt Cignetti, Hawaii’s Mouse Davis and Auburn’s Trooper Taylor. Pease is credited with helping reel Young back in after he spent 10 games of his sophomore season on suspension. Pease demands focus and discipline. And in Young’s case, it’s sometimes came down to tough love.
Leadership abounds at quarterback tomorrow in the uDrove Humanitarian Bowl. Fresno State’s Ryan Colburn and Northern Illinois’ Chandler Harnish were named this year’s Humanitarian Award winners at last night’s bowl banquet. Harnish is the wild card for a Huskies team that is perceived to be run-focused. He has a strong pass efficiency rating of 156.1, 16th in the nation, with 20 touchdown passes against five interceptions. It’s been a seldom-played but wild series between the two schools, tied at 2-2. In 1990, Northern Illinois tore apart 24th-ranked Fresno State, 73-18, scoring 50 points in the first half. The Bulldogs got payback the next year in Fresno when it routed NIU, 55-7.
It’ll be a strange atmosphere for Fresno State linebacker Travis Brown. Even though he spent a forgettable night in Bronco Stadium four weeks ago, it’s a venue that has meaning to him. And it’ll be different tomorrow, with a good chunk of the fans rooting for his team. Brown’s late dad, Dan, was Fresno State’s beloved defensive coordinator before he lost his battle with cancer. But Dan Brown was also a starting linebacker on Boise State’s 1980 Division I-AA national championship team, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of its Camellia Bowl win over Eastern Kentucky on Monday. “(Travis) knows this is where dad played,” said coach Pat Hill. Brown has had a great sophomore season; he’s second-team All-WAC, with 73 tackles, two sacks, and an interception for a touchdown.
A few weeks ago, when the temperature took a two-day plunge that at one point reached seven degrees, I did my annual wondering: when was timing going to catch up with the uDrove Humanitarian Bowl and give it some of that single-digit frigidity? In 13 previous H-Bowls, it hasn’t happened, and it won’t this time, either. It might not be the most pleasant day, as rain or snow is in the forecast, but the high’s going to be a normalish 38 degrees. The warmest H-Bowl ever? The 2005 game between Boise State and Boston College, with a high of 52 despite some rain and even a little hail. The nicest? The second one in 1998, between Idaho and Southern Miss. It was sunny and calm with a high of 50. Just so you know, next Wednesday is the 20th anniversary of the coldest temperature ever recorded in Boise—25 degrees below zero.
The Fresno State band will be at Qwest Arena tonight to play the national anthem for the Idaho Steelheads’ game against Victoria, who fell to the Steelies 4-1 Wednesday night. Then maybe the Bulldog group will strike up a little travelin’ music, as Idaho heads right back out on the road. Weren’t the Steelheads just in Las Vegas a week ago? Uh, yes. And it didn’t go so well. The Steelheads get another shot at the Wranglers tomorrow and Sunday in Orleans Arena. At least they won’t have to deal with the reigning ECHL Player of the Week. Las Vegas’ Tyler Mosienko earned the honor in part because he scored three goals with three assists in last weekend’s sweep of the Steelheads. But Mosienko was recalled Tuesday by San Antonio of the AHL.
The Boise State basketball team tries to snap its three-game losing streak tonight in the most challenging of ways: in the Huntsman Center against Utah. Interestingly enough, Bronco forward Daequon Montreal has played his best ball of the season during this stretch. After managing just over four points and three rebounds a game over the first six games of the season, Montreal is averaging 11.3 points and 8.7 boards since. Boise State will need Montreal at his best against a big Utes front line.
Boise State returns home Sunday to face Texas Pan American—the Broncos against the Broncs. Other news on the Boise State hoops front: coach Leon Rice has picked up his second verbal commitment out of the Australian Institute of Sport, according to Scout.com. Igor Hadziomerovic, a 6-4 shooting guard, joins fellow Aussie Anthony Drmic in Rice’s 2011 recruiting class.
Despite a 105-99 loss at Maine last night, the Idaho Stampede’s Antoine Walker took major strides in proving he can still be NBA-ready. The 34-year-old forward led all scorers with 25 points and added eight rebounds, the best of his four games since starting his pro basketball comeback with the Stampede. Another veteran, Luke Jackson, chipped in 17 points for the Stamps. It was a disappointing night for coach Randy Livingston, facing a Red Claws team for which he served as an assistant last season. The Stampede’s schedule is as crazy as that of the Steelheads. Idaho goes to Springfield tomorrow night—then right back to Maine on Sunday.
The first thing you think of when you hear this name is, “no relation.” But Mark Johnson is the new manager of the Boise Hawks, making his debut as field boss when the 2011 Hawks take the field in June. The baseball Mark Johnson. He played for three major league teams from 1998 to 2004—then had a cameo with the Cardinals in 2008. Johnson’s been on the coaching staff of the Triple-A Iowa Cubs the past two seasons. He replaces a fellow former catcher, Jody Davis, as Boise’s skipper.
This Day In Sports…December 17, 1994:
Boise State’s magical season ends with a 28-14 loss to Youngstown State and coach Jim Tressel in the Division I-AA championship game at Huntington, WV (on Marshall’s home field). The Broncos finished 13-2 with a record-setting season from running back K.C. Adams, who would end up playing just that one year. Three days later in a press conference, coach Pokey Allen would announce he had a rare form of cancer, beginning an agonizing two-year battle that would claim his life.
