Detroit Lions keeping cool about hot start: 'We haven't done anything yet'
The Detroit Lions understand why so many people are excited about their hot start.
After all, coming off the most lopsided victory in franchise history -- Sunday's 48-3 rout of the Kansas City Chiefs -- they've got a chance to start the season 3-0 for the first time in 31 years. Their victories came against teams that had 10-6 records last season.
Heck, NBC broadcaster Bob Costas went so far as to mention Lions and Super Bowl in the same breath Sunday night. That said, the Lions themselves aren't buying into the hype. Not yet, anyway. "We don't take anything for granted," Lions defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch said Monday. "We know where we're at. We know where this team, this organization has come from. It's not like we're coming off a Super Bowl or we're a perennial playoff team. We have to improve every week." "I think we're getting hype outside of this building, but we need to realize there's still a lot of things we need to clean up for us to be a complete team. We need to keep improving."
In other words, the Lions realize they still have a long way to go before they can be considered an elite team, rather than being best known as a franchise that has had one winning season since 1997 and is only three years removed from the only 0-16 campaign in NFL history.
Keeping that history in mind and playing like a team with lots to prove is a good thing, according wide receiver Nate Burleson. "We're a better team when we take the approach that nobody respects us, (that) everybody is looking at us like the same old Lions" said Burleson, who had a team-high seven catches for 93 yards Sunday. "We play a lot better that way." "We haven't done anything yet. We haven't locked (up) a playoff spot. It's not hard to keep the chip on your shoulder. The biggest reason guys in this locker room are playing so hard and have so much passion is because most of us know the past, where this team and organization has been." "I know how how teams look at us. Regardless of how many games we win or if we get a big blowout against Kansas City, nobody really believes we're that good of a team yet. We have to go out and prove it every Sunday. And I'm OK with proving to other teams that we are a real contender."
Lions coach Jim Schwartz knew the aura surrounding his club had changed drastically after he left the team hotel Sunday morning and headed to the game.
When he arrived at Ford Field, he said there were about 10 times as many people as usual milling around the stadium four hours before game time. "There was an excitement for the game we haven't seen in a while," Schwartz said. "People were out early and that excitement carried over to the game. That was good to see from our standpoint."
When the Lions travel to Minnesota on Sunday, they'll be after their first 3-0 start since 1980, when Billy Sims was a rookie.
That was the same season some of the Lions infamously recorded a version of Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust," only to lose seven of the final 12 games and miss the playoffs.
Most of the current Lions might be too young to remember that but all things considered, is it any wonder they're being a bit cautious even if fans aren't? "Nobody is trying to rain on anybody's parade, but it's two games," Schwartz said. "We've played well in spots. There are other things that we haven't done well that we need to improve on. We're certainly not a finished product. I don't want any pats on the back or anything like that." "We have some experienced players. They know two games don't make a season. We have hard-working players who understand it's not about what you've done in the past. It's what you do in the future."
So what does the 2-0 start mean? "It means we started on the right note," Burleson said. "Last year, it was totally the opposite. It left a sour taste in our mouth. This only difference now is we have a good aftertaste after a couple games."
