Bronco-Vandal series is all about the here and now
For Boise State and Idaho, it’s a “what have you done for me lately” rivalry. We know how football’s gone as that series goes on hiatus. The 12 now is a lot bigger than the 12 then. In hoops, the tables have started to turn. Two seasons ago, the Vandals broke a 14-game losing streak to the Broncos. Last year, despite a season that many perceived to be a step back by the Vandals, they hung a 24-point rout on Boise State in Taco Bell Arena. That was the beginning of the end for Greg Graham as coach. In hoops, this rivalry has thrived since the 2009 proclamation by the Broncos’ Anthony Thomas. “You can quote it. You can do whatever you want. Anthony Thomas will never lose to the Idaho Vandals again as long as he plays.” Well, he did twice more. And that’s what is top-of-mind tomorrow night in Moscow.
Before the second semester started, Idaho was averaging just 734 fans a game at home. Now, riding a six-game winning streak, the Vandals have the Cowan Spectrum’s attendance record of 5,676 in their sights. That mark was set back in 2004. It could make for an inflammatory scene in that corner of the Kibbie Dome tomorrow night, but—as it did for the Bronco-Vandal football game last November—the Idaho athletic department is taking measures to keep things civil. There will be virtually no Boise State fans in the stands; it’s the players on the floor who have to watch out. At the very least there will be peace between the Broncos’ Wes Perryman and the Vandals’ Djim Bandoumel. The two played together at Monroe College in New York and remain good friends.
Before we let the latest issue of the Sporting News get away, it’s worth checking out the magazine’s first Top 10 for the 2011 college football season. It has Boise State at No. 9, and its “bold prediction” is that the Broncos “will win the Mountain West in their first year in the conference, capping an undefeated regular season.” SN notes the return of Kellen Moore for his senior year and got this from offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin before he left for Texas: “It’s gotten to the point where Kellen knows what we do so well, and does such a great job with it, that everything is available.”
The Sporting News says the shock over Boise State’s loss to Nevada showed the program’s place in college football. And there’s this quote from Oregon center Jordan Holmes, who started for the Ducks in their 19-8 loss to the Broncos in 2009. Says Holmes: “Anyone who thinks (Boise State) can’t play in a BCS league and win like they do is kidding themselves. Are you really going to hold one loss against them? Everyone loses games.”
Naturally, TCU’s athletic director is peeved over the prospect of the Horned Frogs’ game against Boise State this year being moved to Boise by the Mountain West. “It’s our home game and they told us it would be our home game and to change the rules midstream is not appropriate,” Chris Del Conte told ESPNDallas.com. What if the roles were reversed? Bronco fans would be shoutin’ to high heaven.
Of the four Broncos and two Vandals set for tomorrow’s East-West Shrine Game, Boise State’s Winston Venable probably has the most to accomplish. At 6-0, 220 pounds, he’s a tweener, with a linebacker’s build and a safety’s height. But scouts see him as a pure football player who could make a roster as a free agent this summer. Venable, a nickelbacker during two very productive years for Boise State, says he’ll be plugged in at weakside linebacker tomorrow. “It’s not that much different than what I’d be doing at Boise,” said Venable yesterday on Idaho SportsTalk. “A little different aligment and assignment, but nothing too crazy.” Venable, the only one of the six Broncos in postseason all-star games who hasn’t been invited to the NFL Combine next month, says he’s open to the CFL or arena football if the NFL doesn’t work out.
Glenns Ferry will be glad to know that favorite son Korey Hall was back in practice with Green Bay this week, participating in all drills and looking fully healthy. The former Boise State star is hungry for action in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game in Chicago. Hall and fellow Packer and BSU alum Daryn Colledge have to be loving the buzz around the game, which features the NFL’s oldest rivalry, dating back almost 90 years. Believe it or not, this is the first time the Bears and Packers have met in the playoffs since a week after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The history is more recent in the AFC Championship Game, as in, Steelers playoff excellence starting in the 1970’s. Boise State product Kyle Wilson will likely be all special teams again for the Jets.
The Idaho Steelheads have won four games in the new year, and they’ve scored six goals in three of them. Maybe that’s what it’s going to take against Utah, so the Steelheads don’t have to worry about another late-game fade. There’s more roster shuffle for the Steelheads as they go into two weekend games against the Grizzlies in Qwest Arena. Most notable: forward Michael Neal has been called up by the Texas Stars, although indications are he’ll be back with the team next week. And forward Kael Mouillierat has been placed on the three-day injured list. By the way, the Steelheads’ Mark Derlago has been named captain for the weirdness that will be this year’s “ECHL All-Star Classic” next Wednesday in Bakersfield. The host Condors will be playing a team of all-stars from the rest of the league. Mouillierat is supposed to join Derlago there.
The Idaho Stampede’s myriad roster moves since the season began have helped along the way. But one stands head-and-shoulders, and that was magnified last night in a 109-95 win over Austin in Qwest Arena. The Stampede needed a true point guard most of all, and Cedric Jackson has embraced that role since joining the team on New Year’s Day. Jackson recorded a triple-double against the Toros with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists. He had a lot of help last night, too, as Antoine Walker scored 26 points and Jermareo Davidson 22. Davidson posted his fourth straight double-double as the Stamps picked up their seventh win in the last nine games.
Other college basketball notes: NNU looks to keep it going against Western Washington in Nampa tomorrow night after an energizing 77-67 win over Simon Fraser Tuesday night on Fox Sports Northwest. The College of Idaho returns home this weekend to host Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech, which is ranked seventh in NAIA Division II. On the women’s side, it’s been a record-setting winter in the valley. The Lady Yotes’ Nicole Gall, the former Borah star, needs two points tonight against Southern Oregon to become the C of I’s all-time leading scorer. And Boise State’s Lauren Lenhardt, the Eagle High grad, tries to keep it rolling at Idaho tomorrow night after tying the school record with 37 points against Hawaii last Saturday.
This Day In Sports…January 21, 1979:
In Super Bowl XIII, still one of the most exciting, the Pittsburgh Steelers win their third championship with a 35-31 defeat of the Dallas Cowboys. The turning point came in the third quarter when veteran Dallas tight end Jackie Smith dropped a sure touchdown pass while all alone in the endzone. The Steelers would win the Super Bowl again the following year to give Terry Bradshaw and the Steel Curtain four titles, then a record.
