Montreal to Boise by way of Twin Falls, hoping for big things in Vegas
In 2009, he became Boise State’s first transfer of the new century from the powerful program at College of Southern Idaho. Now Daequon Montreal looks for the payoff, a shot at the NCAA Tournament as a senior. Montreal’s going to have to come up big in the WAC Tournament this week if the Broncos are to stretch a seven-game winning streak to nine. He’s started every game this season, and when he’s hitting inside as he was, for instance, with 16 points at Nevada two weeks ago, it makes everything else in the Boise State offense go. The good news for the Broncos: Montreal also had big nights in both games against New Mexico State this season, scoring 21 and 15 points. Montreal’s averaging 10.3 points and 5.3 rebounds a game.
The survivors of the fifth-through-eighth seed games in the WAC Tournament yesterday were San Jose State (a 75-74 winner over Hawaii) and Nevada (a 90-80 victor over Fresno State). After a first round bye, Idaho debuts tonight against the Spartans, with whom it split this season. The Vandals will be trying to advance to the semifinals versus Utah State tomorrow night. Coach Don Verlin likes the change of venue to Las Vegas this year. "I really believe we can beat anybody in the WAC on a neutral floor," Verlin said. "I really think that gives anybody a chance to win it." Verlin can say that comfortably, since his team was the only one to beat Utah State in WAC play this season. Meanwhile, the Wolf Pack faces New Mexico State tonight for the right to face Boise State in tomorrow night’s other semifinal.
Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore went through his first spring mass media session yesterday. The subject of who he’s going to throw to during his senior season was a natural one, with Austin Pettis and Titus Young now down the road. Moore says you can start by talking about Tyler Shoemaker. “He understands he’s the leader of that (wide receivers) group now,” said Moore. “He’s got to take the next step, essentially understanding that he’s going to get a lot more balls (thrown his way) than he’s used to. He’s got that juice flowing—senior year—big opportunity for him.”
Moore echoed coach Chris Petersen, who has laid some big expectations on Shoemaker. “Tyler needs to take a step,” said Petersen. “He’s a good player. He could be an elite player.” The former Mountain View High star will be moving from the slot to the outside this year, although Petersen says he’ll be playing all over the field. Shoemaker actually averaged more yards per catch (18.2) than Young last season. He had 32 catches for 582 yards and five touchdowns.
Georgia opens spring ball today. And the Bulldogs are hitting the reset button after a thoroughly disappointing season that ended with an embarrassing 10-6 loss to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl. That gave UGA its first losing season in 14 years, and the team is anxious to atone. "We're pumped," quarterback Aaron Murray said in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Especially considering our first game is against Boise State; everyone's just chomping at the bit to get out there and practice." The Dawgs need to determine if there’s anyone to depend on at the tailback spot, currently stocked by the troubled Caleb King and Washaun Ealey. If not, they’ll look at prized blue chip recruit Isaiah Crowell in fall camp.
The WAC is having a heckuva time getting its 2010 football schedule together. It’s monkey wrench after monkey wrench. Commissioner Karl Benson told commissioners in a biting e-mail that schedule planning is “back to ground zero.” First, Nevada started exploring a move of one its three straight non-conference road games against Oregon, Texas Tech and Boise State. Then, 24 hours before Benson said the WAC schedule was going to be unveiled, Fresno State announced a game with San Diego State on December 3, a date the WAC had asked members to keep open to accommodate conference games. The Bulldogs and Wolf Pack aren’t in line for any congeniality awards in their final season in the league.
Time for a rhyme: Mark Derlago is en fuego. Four days after pouring in four goals versus Las Vegas last Saturday, the Idaho Steelheads forward recorded a hat trick last night in a 6-3 win at Ontario. Derlago has a staggering nine goals and four assists in his last four games—and an ECHL-leading 36 goals for the season. Junior Lessard added two tallies for the Steelies last night, while between the pipes, rookie Kris Westblom picked up his first professional victory. The Steelheads catch their breath today before heading back up to Bakersfield for two more games tomorrow and Saturday.
Some campus notes: Boise State’s entry list in the NCAA Wrestling Championships increased from seven to 10 yesterday, as Jake Swartz (174 pounds), Kirk Smith (184) and Matt Casperson (197) were granted at-large bids. Already qualified after earning automatic berths at the Pac-10 Championships are Alan Bartelli, Andrew Hochstrasser, Levi Jones, Jason Chamberlain, Adam Hall, Kurt Swartz and J.T. Felix. Also, the Boise State women’s hoops team saw its season end with a 70-59 loss to Idaho in the first round of the WAC Tournament last night. And the College of Idaho women ended their campaign with a 96-78 loss to Northwestern Iowa in the first round of the NAIA Division II National Tournament despite 33 points from Nicole Gall in her final game.
Here’s the Idaho Stampede scenario for the D-League Playoffs going into this weekend’s two games against Bakersfield in Qwest Arena. At 17-22, the Stampede are just percentage points behind Texas for the eighth and final spot in the postseason—but so are Austin and Fort Wayne. The Stamps, coming off back-to-back wins of 30 points plus, have 11 games left to make their case. They could still nail a winning season if they go 9-2 the rest of the way.
This Day In Sports…March 10, 1946:
The birthday of Jim Valvano, the late North Carolina State coach who led the Cinderella Wolfpack to the 1983 NCAA championship. Valvano is just as well known for his courageous battle against cancer, which would take his life a little over 10 years later. Less than two months before he died, Valvano introduced the V Foundation for cancer research and delivered his famous “Don’t give up—don’t ever give up” speech at the ESPY Awards. Jim Valvano would have been 65 years old today.
